Adventists.
2 folders, 2 items.
The Adventist movement began in the 1820's in upstate New York with the prophecies of William Miller (1782-1849) concerning the imminent return of Christ. The Seventh-Day Adventists would come to be known for their adherence to Saturday as the proper Sabbath Day for worship. Their work among Norwegians and Danes began in Wisconsin in 1855. One of the most important early preachers was the Dane, J. G. Matteson (1835-1896). A Danish-Norwegian seminary was operated in Hutchinson, MN from 1911-1928.
Folder 1 contains general articles and information on Danish and Norwegian Adventist congregations. These churches were located in Oakland, WI; Poy Sippi, WI; Albert Lea and Freeborn County, MN; Hutchinson, MN; Redwood Falls (Morgan-Brookville), MN; West Central Church (Chicago), IL; & Swan Lake, SD. There is a copy of a nineteenth century U. S. map indicating SDA congregations. Folder 2 holds copies of the covers and indices of various Adventist hymnals. Also included in the box are two lengthy articles: "The Work of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church among Danish and Norwegian immigrants in North America" by Dyre Dyresen (1978); and "The Advent Message and its Progess among the Danish-Norwegian People in America" by Louis Martin Halswick (1959).
