Niel M. Johnson (d1930-) taught history at Dana College from 1969 to 1974. While here he wrote Portal to the Plains. He was later archivist and oral historian at the Harry S. Truman Library (1977-1992).
This box contains a copy of Portal to the Plains. It also contains his notes and copies of documents concerning Washington County, Nebraska. They cover such topics as bibliography, land of Indians, Fort Atkinson, trails and roads, Mormons and first towns, stage coach and railroads, crossroad stores and early homes and railroad towns. There is one original drawing by Niel Johnson.
