Academic robes.
Norman Bansen (1920-2004) was born to Danish immigrant parents in Ferndale, California. He lived there until he left for Dana College. He served in World War II (1942-46) in Bengal, India at a 500 bed station hospital where he was an adjutant and civilian personnel officer. He left the Army as a Captain. After the Army he returned to Dana College, graduating in 1947. His professional career continued at Dana except when he was at the University of Minnesota for his M.A. and a year as a visiting professor in Scandinavian Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. At Dana he was a professor in the English department where he taught courses in Scandination literature (among other things) and he also taught Danish in his early years. He did much to cultivate contacts with Denmark and the Danish American community in the U.S. He was one of the founders of the Museum of Danish America. In 1970 he received the Knight of Dannebrog. In 1980 he received an honorary doctorate from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
