James Olsen met Verna Hendricksen while attending a church youth convention. She was 16. They married in 1941. Their daughter Kathryn (Goetz) was born in 1943. They later adopted 2 children : Linda (Valish) and Thomas James Olsen. Verna was from a devout U.E.L.C. family as was James. Both were of Danish descent. This box contains Danish Bibles and pastor's altar book belonging to members of Rev. James and Verna family. Pkt. 1 contains a photograph of Rev. P. C. Jensen in his robes with a ruff as well as a confirmation class photograph with Verna Hendricksen Olsen identified with Rev. P. C. Jensen as pastor. The devotional book given to James and Verna on their wedding has been removed from the packet and is loose in the box. Pkt. 2 contains a kirkesalmebog which belonged to Lars Hampen, the paternal grandfather of James Olsen and the father of Annette Hampen Olsen. Pkt. 3 contains a Bible given to Henry Hendricksen on his confirmation in 1899. Henry is the father of Verna Olsen. Pkt.4 contains an altar book which belonged to Rev. Niels Damskov. It was given to him by his daughter and son-in-law, Esther and Henry Hendricksen in 1915. Pkt. 5 contains a Bible which belonged to Annette Hampen Osen, which was a Christmas gift to her by her husband Martin in 1911. Pkt. 6 contains a Bible which belonged to Madsine Jensen, who was Verna Olsen's maternal great-grandmother, who was born in Denmark in 1848. Pkt. 7 contains the bookmarks found in Madsine's Bible. The plastic bags with the identification of the items have been placed in Box 4 as there was no room in this box. Rev. James W. Olsen was from Kenmare, N.D. He taught band for 5 years in several North Dakota towns before enlisting in the Army Air Foces where he was a photographic school instructor. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain. He graduated from Trinity Seminary in 1949. He served parishes in Farmington, Minn. (1949-1953), Lincoln, Nebr. (1953-1961), Reon, Nev. (1963-1971) and Scottsbluff, Neb. (1971-82). He retired to Loveland, Colorado. He also served as the vice president of church relations and development at Dana College (1961-63) and was lalater on the Board of Regents.
