Jens Mikael Thogersen Winther was born in Brejning, Denmark in 1874 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1896. He attended Trinity Seminary in Elk Horn, Iowa (1896-97) and Blair, Nebraska (1897-98). He was ordained in1898 into the U.D.E.L.C. to serve as a missionary in Japan. He studied in Tokyo (1898-99) and then served several missions in Japan (1899-1921). He returned to Denmark and was a pastor at Norre Felding and Hjerm (1921-1927). He returned as a missionary to Japan (1928-1941). He was an interim pastor at Shelby, Iowa (1941-1946) and Davenport, Iowa (1946-1950). He returned as pastor emeritus to Japan to be a teacher at the Lutheran Bible Institute in Kobe, Japan (1950-1969). Winther was married to Andrea Hansen (1871-1949). Pkt. 2 contains correspondence between Winther and Ed Hansen in 1952. It involves Ed Hansen locating theological books at secondhand bookstores for Winther and Winther's joy in his position with the Lutheran Bible Institute in Kobe. Pkts. 3-5 contains their correspondence for the years 1953-1970. Winther died in 1970. He was buried in Japan. Pkt. 5 contains many tributes to him including a memorial church service held for him at St. Mary's Lutheran Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin. There ia also a copy of Pericopes by Winther.
