Fred Swansen (1889-1955) was the head of the Department of History at Dana College from 1932-1955. He was born to Norwegian American parents in Boston, Massachusetts. The title of his Ph.D. dissertation was "The Norse in Iowa to 1870." He later wrote a biography of C. L. Clausen, a Danish American pastor and pioneer who helped establish Norwegian settlements in northeast Iowa. Before coming to Dana College he was President of Gale College in Galesville, Wisconsin, and a teacher at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. This box contains material from Swansen's time at Gale College (1920-1925) and some items from later. Gale College was founded in 1854 by George Gale. From 1859-1877 the school was operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church; from 1878-1901 by the Presbyterian General Assembly; and from 1901 until the college closed in 1939 by the Synod of the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. PACKET #2: Brochures of general college information, announcements, and Gale College Bulletins from July of 1929 to May of 1931.
